While the Boomer Generation was growing up, weddings were generally traditional; Get married in your local church, have the reception, and then off to your honeymoon. Things have changed. With the Gen X / YouTube / MySpace crowd entering the wedding market, there has been a major paradigm shift. In this article, I will address what is still relevant from the past, and what is happening in current trends. For the newlyweds just starting out on their own, it can be a mixture. They need the basics, such as dishes, flatware, glasses, and the ever popular toaster oven, which are available at your traditional registry sites, but they can also benefit from the trend of online registries. More and more couples are registering online, which allows such things as individuals to "club" together to buy larger items, such as furniture, major appliances, or even contribute toward their honeymoon. For couples that are getting married after college, the military, or similar circumstances that find them already having the "basics", more adventurous opportunities are available. They might register with a sporting goods company, like REI, or Cabela's to get the sporting equipment that they desire. I've even seen couples register at The Home Depot, or Lowe's to get the things they need for their new home. Such couples may not have some of the "luxury items", such as fine china or crystal stemware, so the traditional sites can be relevant, and they should register accordingly. It's a brave new world when it comes to wedding gifts, and almost anything goes! Gift registry is no longer a "Ladies Only" affair. The men are getting involved as couples register together to get the things that both of them want. Let's face it, you'll both get equal enjoyment out of that barbeque grill or bar set, so go for it! When older couples wed, their needs and wants vary by their different situations. In most cases, they will already have all the household items, so giving them the gift of paying for their photography, sending them on a cruise, or enrolling them in a wine-of-the-month club make nice gestures. If you're getting married, register with sites that will enable your friends and family to give you what you need, what you want, and throw in a fantasy gift, or two, you never know! Most of all, a wedding gift should be thoughtful, and reflect not only the couples personality, but also the givers good wishes. www.RomanceinNewOrleans.com |
